This is a rather unusual event, as for much of the tour, we will be visiting only the remains of buildings or even just their sites. We will start at St Mary’s Church, Old Malton, YO17 7HB. The Church was built c 1150 and is all that survives of the enormous church of the Gilbertine Priory. After our tour of the church & the surviving monastic remains, we will drive (car -sharing if possible,) to the carpark of the Old Lodge Hotel. From there we will walk across fields (could be uneven & muddy) to the site of the Roman Fort of Derventio. There are some substantial earthworks & useful information boards around the site. Close by is the site of the 11th century castle, destroyed by Robert the Bruce in 1322. Walking down Sheepfoot Hill Lane we will pass the remains of the 1798 Workhouse before we reach the (much altered) John Carr Bridge over the River Derwent. A support of the bridge is on an island where the Gilbertine monks built a leper colony. Returning via Castlegate we will walk back up the hill to the Old Lodge Hotel where we will have tea & homemade biscuit. The Old Lodge is built on the site of the gatehouse of the Norman Castle & incorporates remains of a demolished Jacobean mansion.
Sensible shoes & waterproof clothes advised.
Cost £20 to include donations & tea.
Directions & parking information will be provided upon booking.
