Wardlaw Mausoleum is in the village of Kirkhill, near Invereness, Scotland. It was the private burial place of Clan Fraser of Lovat. It was built in 1634 and was altered by the famous Simon 11th Lord Lovat, known as the 'Old Fox' in 1722. He went on to play a major part in the Jacobite Rebellion in 1745 and was beheaded at the Tower of London in April 1747. His coffin and those of his family can be seen in the crypt. Simon also appears in the 'Outlander' series of books and TV series by Diana Gabaldon, where his (fictitious) grandson, Jamie Fraser, is the main character.
The mausoleum was recently passed into the ownership of Aird Community Trust and is run by the Aird Heritage Group. All donations will help us care for the building and cover the running and maintenance costs. We are also planning to carry out repairs to the building and improve the exhibition inside.
